Chiang Mai is Northern Thailand's most rewarding destination for travellers who take their time. Ancient walled temples, world-class cooking schools, vibrant night markets, and easy day trips to hill-tribe villages and elephant sanctuaries make it one of the country's richest stops — at a fraction of the cost of the south. The Old City moat area is the natural base for first-time visitors: most temples, cooking schools, and the Saturday Walking Street on Wualai Road are within easy walking distance. Nimman Road (Nimmanhaemin) is trendier and younger, anchored by the One Nimman lifestyle complex and lined with specialty coffee shops and galleries. For complete peace, boutique resorts in the hills north of the city — Mae Rim, Mae Sa, Hang Dong — offer an entirely different atmosphere. November and December are peak months (Loy Krathong and the Flower Festival); book 4-star and 5-star hotels well in advance. March and April bring smoky skies from agricultural burning.
